The magic in Zentek is Comfortemp®, a Phase Change Material (PCM) that reacts to body or outside temperatures. Depending on the dog’s situation or activity level, it absorbs excess body heat and stores it until it is needed again. This keeps your dog in its comfort zone longer.

Exactly what is Comfortemp?

Comfortemp® is the brand name for intelligent non-wovens, which are textile materials made from high-quality fibers. They do their job, hidden away in filters, sanitary products and in many technical applications, such as solar panels.

Commerical and industrial applications for PCM technology were originally developed in the 1960’s for use in NASA space suits.

Comfortemp® nonwovens contain millions of micro-encapsulated PCMs too small for the human eye to see. The military has used this material to hide troops in Iraq because it made any heat image invisible to infrared cameras.

How does this work in Zentek crate mats?

When the surface temperature of the dog rises above the preset temperature of 85 degrees, the PCM turns from a solid to a liquid state and automatically absorbs and stores the excess heat from the dog’s body, cooling the animal. When the outside temperature drops below 85 degrees, the PCM reverts from a liquid back to a solid and automatically releases the stored heat back to the dog.

Because air moving over the fabric “recharges” it and allows the mat to absorb even more heat, the manufacturer recommends putting the Zentek mat on top of your regular crate pad.

The Zentek mat is about 3/4" thick and has a nylon shell on one side, nylon mesh on the other. Inside the mat is a layer of fleece for softness and the Comfortemp material, which is next to the mesh lining. You can use either side of the mat for the dog. The smooth side doesn’t hold dog hair.

Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Wash colors separately. Do not bleach. Do not use fabric softeners. Hang to dry. Do not wash in hot water and do not put in hot dryer.
